How is Business Approaching Climate Change?
In July 2007, the Global Reporting Initiative sampled annual sustainability reports by international companies in the Financial Times'
FT Global 500. Their research showed that companies currently tend to report extensively on new business opportunities from climate
change and its effects. Only 20 percent reported any risks from climate change to their business. This contrasts with the UK
Government's Stern Report on the Economics of Climate Change in 2006 which concluded that climate change poses significant risk to the
global economy.
How we can help
This outwardly positive approach has its benefits, but are companies really being honest with themselves? Sd3's ClimateEnergy services
aim to provide balance to the picture. We aim to offer something unique - our ability to bring about complete, sustainable solutions to
the challenges of climate change and the risks and opportunities related to it in business and government.
Corporations and local governments will be facing ever-increasing challenges as new legislation such as the UK's Climate Change Bill,
the Carbon Reduction Commitment, the next phase of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and the international carbon trading link come into
force over the next 6 to 18 months.
Climate change is a global issue that can be addressed at local level. We work at both levels. Our global policy development experience
for example, includes Clean Development Mechanism strategy & implementation for large corporations. On the local level we can connect
the climate change issue to workplace behavioural change and productivity improvements in business as well as in conjunction with our
other sustainability products.
