Guiding Principles
Many organisations find it helps to be clear about the principles they wish to follow. These principles can help develop the Vision for becoming more sustainable and act as a common and firm foundation for decision-making along the way.
There are many different ways to express firm foundations for a sustainable society. It is important to develop principles that make sense for your organisation - without losing sight of the fundamental values that they seek to uphold.
A wide range of off-the-shelf principles can be a useful starting point - or may even be perfect as they are.
These include: The natural step system conditions
The SIGMA principles
The five capitals
The triple bottom line
The UK government sustainable development objectives
These can be developed to fit your needs. Work to understand and communicate what they mean in practice at an operational level. Develop ways to express the principles so that they are relevant, understandable and can be applied throughout your organisation.
Remember that these will need to be communicated and reinforced regularly to remain a guiding force for your organisation’s progress.
