Producer
Responsibility
Who wants to live near a landfill? consumers
don’t necessarily want ‘things’ but rather the services they provide
and business wants to get the most value out of each product or
service it produces while reducing future risks and liabilities.
Producer responsibility is about what companies do to match these
sometimes conflicting demands. It is about thinking through the
whole life cycle of products and services and obtaining maximum
value from them while minimising any negative impacts of production,
use or at product end of life. It’s about doing all this and still
being successful.
Primarily driven by a series of legislation,
especially in European markets and spreading globally, producer
responsibility has wide implications for many businesses and has
been a stimulus for new innovations and opportunities that no
company should ignore. In particular, recent and forthcoming legislation
requires companies to take responsibility for the packaging around
their products as well as for the actual product at the end of
its life. For example, the Packaging Directive, the Waste end
of life Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Directive and
the End of Life Vehicles Directives all put greater responsibilities
on the producer.
